Pac-Man 256 – Endless Arcade Maze Review
Pac-Man 256 – Endless Arcade Maze is a clever spin on Bandai Namco Entertainment’s Pac-Man and from the creators of Crossy Road. Taking elements from both Pac-Man and Crossy Road, Hipster Whale’s Pac-Man 256 is an enjoyable game for iOS (iPhone, iPad) and Android that relies on both nostalgia and addictive endless-runner style gameplay.
If you’re unaware, the 256 in the title refers to the infamous glitch ending of Pac-Man. The game’s logic didn’t have the full ability to create a 256th map, and as a result the right side of the screen in that level became a jumbled mess of letter, fruit and ghosts – a child’s worst nightmare. Pac-Man 256 – Endless Arcade Maze turns the glitch into the entity that chases you in endless runners, much like Temple Run’s creepy monkey demons that chase you. Combined with the endless running features are elements that almost exactly replicate the original game mechanics of Pac-Man. Pac-Man can eat pellets to score points, and power pellets to gain the ability to chase ghosts.
All of these elements make this iPhone game a no brainer. While some players may play simply to get as far as they can or beat their friends, enough of the core experience of Pac-Man is here for hardcore Pac-Man players, which definitely exist by the way. I especially love the slightly techno twist on the original soundtrack. The new elements of this game feel right at home in a Hipster Whale title. There are custom power-ups that make Pac-Man fire lasers, among other things, that are upgradeable via coins that can be picked up and rewarded.
No iPad game is perfect, and as it seems Pac-Man 256 – Endless Arcade Maze suffers from some of the same issues as other free to play titles. Namely, the energy system known from other titles can be seen here in the form of lives, meaning that you can only play so many times in a period of time before waiting for more lives to become available, although there is the option to play for free if you’re okay without playing with your custom power-ups. Like the original, not much changes as you progress, which can make the game repetitive and boring if you don’t have that unhealthy itch to top your own scores.
Pac-Man 256 – Endless Arcade Maze is both modern and incredibly nostalgic. Hipster Whale has succeeded in combining the fun of Pac-Man along with the addictive challenge from endless runners. Familiar gameplay, unique power ups and clever level design make this Android game a must have.
Summary: I'm sure you like Pac-Man and Crossy Road. If so, you should play Pac-Man 256 - Endless Arcade Maze. The core elements of Pac-Man are here and the new features make it even better. This arcade game for iOS (iPhone, iPad) and Android is a must-have.
