Hong Kong Style Mahjong from Paul Vella of PS Games is one of those mobile games that could not have a more literal title if it tried, as what you will be doing in the game is exactly what you expect from a Mahjong title.

In this iOS game, you will play rounds of Mahjong. However, it’s not the original version, you will play the slightly more complicated variety: Hong Kong style. For players who have no idea about the game of Mahjong, then this title may not be for you. If you are a big fan of this classic game, though, keep on reading to see how this game shapes up to be the real thing.

Let’s start with the gameplay. In an Android game such as this, you simply need a way to play your tiles, and that’s exactly what this game does. Simply slide your finger on a tile all the way onto the playing field, and it will proceed to snap into place. There is little more than that when it comes to the controls, with the only exception being tapping on an option to “pass” or “chow.”

Since this is a mobile game that follows the same rules of Hong Kong Style Mahjong, it should come as no surprise to anyone that it plays exactly as you would expect, providing you already know the instructions beforehand. When it comes to the user interface, it manages to show everything you could ever need to fully understand whose turn it is, what’s happening next, and any other statistics that you might need to help you advance.

Some may argue that the game lacks a bit of style. The animations may be a little lackluster as you only see it at the start of a new round. Also, the visuals may be a little dull. Nevertheless, the user interface is great as well as the graphics on the tiles itself, as the small, little symbols and icons are a nice visual treat for the eyes overall.

For players who enjoy some company when they play Mahjong, you will be able to play against four (4) AI opponents. It would have been better if you could play online against other players but this feature is not available. We could suggest to the developer for the next update.

Another thing we could propose for future version is a tutorial. I believe this will enable new players to try this game even though they haven’t really played Mahjong before.

The other feature of the game that we like, regardless of how little or how much you play in one day, you can always return to it the next day and your save will still be there. Also, it doesn’t matter how bad you played, you can always start a new game if your score is starting to dwindle into the double digits or even lower, if luck really isn’t on your side.

Overall, Hong Kong Style Mahjong is clearly a game that is designed specifically for fans of the classic game. The tiles look nice and the developer put effort even in the smallest detail. This Android and iOS game is probably one of the better Mahjong alternatives you can get for your mobile device. It’s free to start with and simply pay $2.99 if you want to remove the advertisement (and support the developer).
